Mollerat, Combustibles industriels et industries de l'éclairage au gaz vers
1830-1840.
Vers 1830, Mollerat réoriente ses recherches sur la distillation,
qu'il applique au bois dans sa belle usine de Pouilly-sur-Saône (Côte-d'Or). Il
commence en effet à prospecter la houille dans le bassin d'Epinac-Autun en
Bourgogne, notamment pour expérimenter la fabrication du gaz d'éclairage par
distillation de la houille dont les Anglais sont les précurseurs, une vraie
révolution dans les moeurs. Curieusement, il néglige l'huile de schiste
également découverte près d'Autun dès les année 1820, et qui est pourtant
susceptible de fournir du gaz d'éclairage après distillation. Mais Mollerat se
tourne vers l'huile de schiste abondante et bon marché en Angleterre où il
dépose deux magnifiques brevets pour une usine d'éclairage au gaz fonctionnant
par distillation de ce combustible. Cette aventure totalement méconnue montre
que par ses lectures, ses voyages et ses rencontres, Mollerat entretient des
liens étroits avec tout ce que l'Europe compte de scientifiques et
d'industriels et doit être rangé parmi les grands innovateurs.
In about 1830 Mollerat reorients his research on
distillation which he applies to wood in his very modern factory in
Pouilly-sur-Saône (Côte-d'Or). In fact, he begins to prospect for coal in the
bassin of Epinac-Autun in Burgundy. In particular he performs experiments in
the manufacture of gas for lighting by distilling coal in which the English are
the precursors - a true revolution in customs. Curiously, he neglects the shale
oil which was discovered near Autun in the 1820s, and which can be used for gas
lighting after distillation. But Mollerat resorts to the shale oil of England
which is cheap and plentiful and here he files two magnificent patents for a
gaz lighting factory operated by distillation of this fuel. This totally
ignored adventure shows that, by his readings, his personal relations and his
travels, Mollerat maintains close ties with all the leading European scientists
and manufacturers, and should be ranked among the great innovators.
