Whatever happened to the gentilshommes
campagnards ? :
counting nobles in Burgundy, c. 1682

A meeting in 1682 convened to discuss matters pertaining to the
franc-fief saw, according to the prince of Condé’s intendant, an unprecedented
mass gathering of 2,459 Burgundian gentilshommes. There is no written record of
who attended this meeting, but how reliable is this figure when we consider
that the population of gentilhommes campagnards is supposed to have been in
decline in seventeenth-century France. Can an examination of the Burgundian
records of the period reveal the identity of these petty nobles ? In the
process of counting nobles, this article tests the reliability of official
records and reconsiders definitions of the gentilhomme campagnard in order to
establish the size of the Burgundian noble population.

En 1682,
une assemblée fut convoquée pour discuter des droits de mutation et du
franc-fief : d’après l’intendant du prince de Condé, cette assemblée sans
précédent rassembla 2 459 gentilshommes bourguignons. En l’absence d’un
registre de ceux qui se rassemblèrent, peut-on s’appuyer véritablement sur
cette déclaration verbale alors que la popupation des gentilshommes campagnards
est supposée décroître dans la France du xviie
siècle ? Est-il possible de découvrir l’identité de cette petite noblesse
en examinant d’autres registres bourguignons ? En menant un dénombrement
des nobles, cet article vérifie la précision des registres officiels et réexamine
également les définitions du gentilhomme campagnard afin d’évaluer le nombre
des nobles bourguignons.
