Des enceintes urbaines
en comté de Bourgogne.
Les exemples d’Arbois,
Poligny et Salins de 1595 à 1634
Suite à l’invasion d’Henri IV sur le sol comtois le constat
est sans appel : les enceintes urbaines tombent en ruine et sont désuètes
face à l’artillerie. Pourtant on remarque aisément que les municipalités les
entretiennent régulièrement, mais de façon sporadique. Au cours de cette
période le comté de Bourgogne est en état d’éminent péril, une tension
s’installe. En ces temps d’insécurité (peste, bandes armées) les enceintes de
second rang font office de refuge. Il n’y pas de modernisation comme à Dole et
à Gray, mais les habitants et les populations proches de ces villes peuvent se
réfugier à l’intérieur des murs. Les places telles qu’Arbois et Poligny
tomberont lors de la guerre de Dix Ans, seules celles de premier ordre résisteront.
Avec l’annexion du comté de Bourgogne au royaume de France en 1674, les
enceintes urbaines d’Arbois et Poligny seront démantelées, seule Salins sera
modernisé par Vauban.

Following Henry the
4th invasion on the comtois territory, the report is irrevocable : the
urban surrounding walls falls in ruin and are moot against modern artillery.
Nevertheless, we can easily notice that town councils are restoring them often
but only focusing on some spots. During that time, the County of Bourgogne was
in a state of imminent peril, the tension was growing. During this period of
insecurity (plague, armed groups), the second rank surrounding wall cities are
used as refuge. No modernization was made as it had been made in Dole and Gray,
but the inhabitants and people close to these cities can find refuge inside
their walls. Places like Arbois and Poligny will fall during the ten-year war,
only the first order ones will resist. With the appending of the County of
Bourgogne to the Kingdom of France in 1674, the urban surrounding wall of
Arbois and Poligny will be taken down, only the one of Salins will be
modernized by Vauban.
